History

The Tenterden Singers were formed around 1944 and were then known as the Tenterden Choral Society. Membership fluctuated over the years, but it is thought that at one time around eighty singers attended rehearsals and regularly performed works such as Handel’s Messiah and Stainer’s Crucifixion.

Over the years, members retired or moved away. By the 1990s, numbers had dwindled to a very modest fifteen or so singers. Various Musical Directors steered the group until, in 1998, Stephen Pusey took up the baton.

Wiith the smaller size of the choir it was not possible to sing the major choral works and so our name was changed to The Tenterden Singers. We also expanded the range of music that we sing to include everything from medieval plain song, through spirituals to songs from films and shows.

In recent years the Tenterden Singers have enjoyed a variety of different engagements. We have sung in many of the Marsh Churches, in Rolvenden and Great Chart to support local charitable causes. More recently we have sung at the Biddenden Flair Festival of Music and Literature.

We are currently based at St Andrew's Parish Centre, Asford Road, Tenterden.
